lighting and colour
With the use of lighting the audience can assume on the genre by the way the lighting is displayed, In my own thriller, i will be using different levels of low key lighting as it creates a mysterious or suspense like atmosphere.Colour is also a key convention for mise en scene as we associate emotions and thoughts with different colours, red can be associated with love, rage and blood. I can apply this to thriller conventions and use dark greys, black and red.
colour
Colour has connotations associated with it
and can be used to create a mood and atmosphere.-white= represents purity, peace. so this is what a victim or protagonist should wear.
-orange= action-adventure
-Black= represents death and darkness which are the likely colours you would see on an antagonist becasue it makes them look dark and intimidating.
-Red= this colour reminds you of blood, revenge and obsession which most thrillers have to create suspence.
A thriller would use the colours red and black because they signify all the things that a thriller should have. This includes darkness from the black and depending on the themes, revenge, blood or hate then red will bring that theme alive in a thriller. As an audience member you wouldnt want to see such bright colours lke yellow or pink becasue they are associated with happy things and doesnt create suspence.
lighting
Angles of lighting
Under lighting
light comes from below the person this tends to have a disorting effect on the character. In black swan at 0:17 there is an under lighting where she is dancing showing her in a bad light which is exciting for the audience.
light comes from above, high lighting the features of a character. Often creates a glamorous and superior look on a character. for example in transformers at 0:42 where the transformer is sitting in the chair there is a top light on him to show how powerful the position he's in.
light source is behind the person. If little or no light is used, silhouettes are created.
types of lighting
Low-key
The lighting is dark with small areas of light or shade, which also creates shadows. As you can see only little light is shown but its mostly dark this is the type of lighting thrillers contain becasue the dark gives fear which the audience should feel watching it.
High-key
Lighting appears more natural however clearly brighter than natural.the scene is evenly lit throughout with no shade. This type of lighting is not common in a thriller because it doesn't create as much emotion than the low key which is conventional to a thriller.
Natural lighting
When no lighting has been added, it is what you expect to see. This is a picture taken from transformers showing that the light is only coming from the sun which represents natural light. It gives that natural effect to the audience which is good for thrillers cause you want it to be as real as possible.
In the beginning of the scene there is not much lighting the low key lighting is mixed with the lights from the cieling. However when batman appears at 0:09 the lights go completly of which makes the audience anxious and affraid of what will appear.
The scene begins with an angle of backlighting and we see the female victim for the first time. At 0:05 there is a shock of high-key lighting as she switchs on the light which gives the setting a warm and relaxed feel. However later on during the scene the lights switch of making the room lowkey at 0:54 Automatically the audience fear for her because we know shes alone but someone could be hiding waiting to get her at this point the audience has an advantage of dramatic irony. She then goes to switch on the light once more bringing the room back to high-key and approaches the garage door. As she turns around the antagonist appears and he chases her around trying to kill her. The female victim gets trapped in the garage door and eventually dies, as she dies the lights finally go out to represent that she is dead. This whole scene has been shown through a series of lighting choice to show the emotion of the victim.

Another detailed post where you identify and analyse the different types of lighting used within thrillers. Your dicsussion on colour is also very good where connotations are referred to. Good scene analysis and the use of colour also.
