Research:sound

Sounds are used in films to create understanding for the audience and to create more meaning about the character and their emotions. Sound is also used to create a response from the audience. Sound makes you uncomfortable and builds tension to make moments remember-able and epic.

There are 6 types of sound that can be presented in films:

Diegetic sound-Sound which is apart of the film world for example it could be dialogue, music from a radio or phone this can be on or off screen. In blade he is being attacked by the vampires and when he draws his sword at 8 seconds into the clip you hear the sharpness of it. The audience

Non-diegetic sound-sound which is not apart of the film world for example a soundtrack, sound effects or a voice over.
this is a scene taken from die hard as the women walks and the piece of iconography which is the knife is shown a soundtrack plays to increase the anxiety level making the audience guess her intentions.

On screen sound-you can see where the sound is coming from for example in final destination 5 at 1:56 where you can hear the electric box being sparked and see it on screen. its made obvious by the director making the audience know that its important they see it.

Off screen sound-you can hear the sound but cannot see where its coming from, but it makes sense to the film world for example traffic sounds, coughing or people talking. bellow is an example of off screen sound when the door gets slammed at 1:28 the audience gets a jump when they hear the door because its loud and the expectations of seeing the joker comes with something bad.

parallel sound- this is when the sound you hear in a film is parallel to what you expect for example a scene with children playing in a school the parallel sounds would be laughter and talking.
in jaws you can hear children playing, the sea and families enjoying the sun.
contrapuntal sound- this is when the sound does not match the expectations of what you are viewing an example of this is jaws. the scene of the beach and accompanied by the contrapuntal sound of the theme tune 'dur dur' which does not fit with the happy images presented by the director. this is shown at 1:39.

in my thriller I wish to use non-digetic sounds of a child playing and a car crash. i have chosen this type of sound because in my opinion it is most effective when you hear things you cannot see. the audience will be shocked and terrified of the sound track because it will be used to create intensity.

  1. Key terms have been identified and some analysis has taken place of thriller scenes. You discuss how and why you plan to use non-diegetic sound well.

    To improve;
    -try and discuss audience responses to the sounds by allowing your writing to take on the PEER structure
