Research:editing

•Films are joined together at certain points. The length of each shot determines the pace of the film and helps determine the mood. All these different things can be done by editing clips and scenes of the film. Film trailers are an excellent way in connecting an audience to a film. Film trailers mainly use a mixture of editing styles, techniques and also speed to appeal to an audience and to also advertise a film.

there are different types of editing you can apply to a film.

Straight cut
When one shot moves into another shot in an edit and it does not confuse the audience. In the trailer of batman dark knight rises, at 0.32 there's a straight cut. This is used to switch scenes quickly moving straight to the action.

Fade to black
When one shot goes/moves into another and there is a black filter in between.

wipe cut
When the shot slides into another.

dissolve
When one shot disintegrates into another.

Reaction shot
Any shot (often used as a cutaway) in which a subject reacts to a previous shot.
Montage
Is the speed of editing, where shots are quickly juxtaposed together to create excitement.
Slow editing
Is when clips are put together at a slower pace and this is to create suspense and capture action. Slow editing allows the audience to process what is happening to the characters for example this fighting scene from transformers dark of the moon shows numerous shots of slow edits at 0:06 when the transformer is falling slowly to the ground. At 0:35 where optimus prime's arm is disconnected slow edit is used to show how important his arm is to him.
Fast editing
Is when clips are put together at a fast pace and this is to create suspense and thrill. Fast editing gives an audience member a sudden rush of emotion making a moment intense in such a short space of time.

180° rule
Imagine a hypothetical line drawn between two or more actors. The camera must not shoot on the other side of the line and this is because it can confuse the audience and also the shooting will not be consistent. 180 degree rule
shot reverse shot
This is mostly used in films where a conversation is taking place and it is when one shot quickly follows another. 1:02 there is a shot reverse shot of the green goblin speaking to himself showing the different sides of him.

jump cut
A drastic camera movement that is noticeable to the eye
The shot/edit almost ‘jumps. At 0:05 when he reaches for the gun there is a jump cut to where he is holding it up at 0:06.

This is a trailer from the thriller Carrie there are many editing techniques used to make the film appealing. As the trailer starts there is a fade out at 0:21 of the mother singing giving a depressing effect showing how sad she is. The fade out could represent her soul dying or her happiness fading away. At 0:49 there is a slow motion shot of the girls bullying Carrie, this shows that it is a significant moment so its slowed down for the audience to realize the importance.

In my thriller I will use different techniques to provide that chilling experience for the audience such as fast editing which will increase anxiety levels. also I will use a montage at the beginning flashing photos and films of the innocent girl in my thriller. The reason I choose this is because I want the audience to develop an opinion of the girl that she is normal and happy.

  1. Definitions are well applied to terms and some good examples selected and discussed.

    To improve;
-all examples should be from the thriller genre
-provide an example from a thriller at the end that you analyse using PEER by stating the impact and understanding the editing has amongst the audeince.
